MEMORY LANE: WHILE WE WERE YOUNG, SNAIL BUSINESS WAS ATTRACTIVE.

Snails
By Prince Kelly O. Udebhulu.

Oh my memory! It is worth remembering that we once left home late in the night to search for snails in the bush unaware the whereabouts of such snails in that bush, but the spirit of imagination landed us often in a successful location where we found abundant snails but at times, a futile search also.  The snail business was attractive enough that grown up boys in the village joined in the popularly known business for the female,  disguised and returned back very early in the morning as non-participants in the snail business!

The sole habitat of snails is the soil, very often, snails are picked from the trees especially during wet seasons.  You must be smart enough to see the snail with the help of your oil lamb, else, your partner will pick what you sighted that often resulted in misunderstanding (not conflict) because you will still continue the search for snails collectively. What a communal life that is void of disharmony and envy!

What  a wound to remember often sustained in the bush during the hurry search for snails!  Instances abound where sleeping snakes are sighted, a stampede worth remembering. Does the wound or stampede really prevented the search? I see the answer as the reader here does. This snail business serve as complement to rubber business to the young ones mostly because some snails are picked during tapping of rubber trees very early in the money as the conscious spirit arose often that a sale of snails can afford the seller a better meal, clothes and meet the opposite sex desires for clothes, soft drinks and so on. What a social life to remember.
Snail

What about the marketing strategies? The zealous waiting for the returns from the sales of snail in the market? Or the mood to invite your colleagues to wake you up the next day for the search for snails in the bush? Haba! you forgot so soon how your friends gathered to go for snail search and you were ignored? Release yourself once again to remember how you used your searched snails played local league loves. I will remind you all these shortly. Keep tone!!!

...to be continued

Bright Osemudiamen Kelly scoring skills and Potentials in future football.

Spanish born Nigerian kid set to play Messi’s role in La liga, Espana.

By Uchendu Onuoha - Madrid
The best way to success it is said, is to follow the footsteps of those who have successfully journeyed before us. And that is exactly what Bright Osemudiamen Kelly, who turned eight years on October 26, 2013 was out to accomplish in far away Spainish La Liga. Today, he has made significant sensational football skills in the Bundesliga (Germany). He successfully played for Club Fischeln ( Krefeld), Fortuna Dusseldolf and presently in KFC Uerdingen 05 in Germany as top striker respectively.
Having started early, and was discovered at the same age and almost the same manner Leo Messi was discovered and groomed, Osemudiamen may end up becoming another whiz kid footballer. Affectionately called Ose by his fans, friends and handlers, he was the latest sensation in the Spanish youth league and performing exceedingly too fantastic in the Bundesliga youth teams.
This football wonder kid has left no one in doubt that he has been anointed and called to play the round leather game as the spirit of football is upon him. The field is his pulpit, his Bible is his legs, and his message is the gospel of football delivered through scoring goals to the ovation of his spectators whom the stadium is their temple. Once he steps into the field of play, he becomes possessed with the football spirit as the round leather obeys his commands as he meanders his way through like water in a creek, creeping through and tearing the opponent’s defence apart to score goals.
Osemudiamen, (Ose) meaning, God stands for me in Esan dialect, played for Yuncos, Toledo junior team where he was spotted and called for trial by Getafe, where he subsequently made it to the soccer team, Getafe CF, D football 7 before moving to Germany to continue his soccer profession and studies. Ose is an embodiment of striking skills. A talented top striker and star in the making. A fast striker with an insatiable appetite for goals, he is aided by excellent sense of positioning. He possesses the energy and technical skills of CR7 of Real Madrid, the mesmerizing runs of Messi of FC Barcelona, and the lethal finishing of Samuel Eto’o.
This star in the making was a delight to watch during their match with Rayo FC, D team on December 28, 2013 in Madrid where he scored the winning goal for his club. During the match, this reporter spoke with his father, Kelly, who is equally his manager.
According to Kelly, Ose loves football and his parent’s country Nigeria, that he assures everyone at this age that he will join other Nigerian young stars in the future to lift Nigeria soccer ranking.
Despite being born in Spain and stands a greater opportunity of playing for the Spanish national team in the future, his keen interest is to play for his parent’s country Nigeria.

Agenda Items for the National Conference or Dialogue

Barr. Okoye
By Festus Okoye, Source: Daily Trust
Other than the issue of the nomenclature of the proposed National Conference or Dialogue, the next most important and contentious issue is the Agenda for the proposed National Conference or Dialogue.
The issue of the Agenda for the National Conference or Dialogue would have been less contentious and more simplified if the Federal Government had done its homework and articulated its own position before constituting the Advisory Committee on National Conference or Dialogue. The fact that the proposed Conference or Dialogue has no agenda and name shows that the government did not think through the issues before putting it out to the Nigerian people.
It would have been better for the Federal Government to be clear on what it wants. Does it want a Sovereign National Conference with full powers and autonomy? Does it want a Constitutional Conference or a National Conference with limited powers and autonomy? Or does the government want a National Dialogue/Consultation that will serve as a talk shop for people to understand each other and some of the challenges confronting the nation?
The settlement of the type of Conference or Dialogue the government wants will also determine the Agenda for the Conference. So, the Agenda being proposed will imagine the different scenarios and possibilities and assume that there is an agreement that the Nigerian people want to discuss. In other words, there is no agreement on what should be on the Agenda and what should be excluded. It is therefore the responsibility of those who know to advice on the best approach that is rational and pragmatic.
The take off point is that there is a consensus that Nigeria is a sovereign State. This presupposes that the issue of the sovereignty of the country is not in doubt. That being the case, it is not contestable that there cannot be two sovereigns in a sovereign State. It is also not in dispute that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999(as amended) is a product of transition from military rule to civilian rule and that the said Constitution with all its imperfections has served the Nigerian people since 1999. Therefore, for Nigeria to have a Sovereign National Conference, one sovereign must give way. This is because as Professor Nwabueze posited in his book, Constitutional Democracy in Africa, Volume 5:
"Democratic transition by way of a Sovereign National Conference is a coup'etat, just like military takeover of the state, and coups involve a break in governmental legitimacy. That the form of government overthrown by means of a Sovereign National Conference itself lacks legitimacy makes no difference. Two wrongs do not and cannot make a right; an illegal act does not cease to be such because its purpose is to put right another illegal act; that would only compound matters"
Although section 14(2) (a) of the Constitution locates sovereignty in the people of Nigeria, such is circumscribed by the Constitution itself. Section 14(2) (a) of the Constitution provides that:
Sovereignty belongs to the people of Nigeria from whom government through this Constitution derives all its powers and authority
It is my understanding that legal sovereignty is vested in the State on behalf of the people. The people is not the sovereign, the government is the sovereign. I agree on the reality of popular sovereignty within the limits consistent with the practice of government under which sovereignty is held by the government on behalf of the people, and is exercised by it by virtue of its responsibility to govern. This is the reality of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is this reality that locates the legislative powers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the National Assembly consisting of a Senate and a House of Representatives. It is also this same reality that locates the mode of altering the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in section 9 of the same Constitution. It is also this same reality that is reinforced in section 1(1) of the Constitution wherein it is stated that the Constitution is supreme and its provisions shall have binding force on all authorities and persons throughout the Federal Republic of Nigeria. To this end, section 1(2) of the same Constitution also provides that the Federal Republic of Nigeria shall not be governed, nor shall any person or group of persons take control of the government of Nigeria or any part thereof, except in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.
The implication of Section 1(1) and Section 1(2) of the Constitution is that anybody advocating for a Sovereign National Conference must first overthrow or weaken considerably the existing legal order before such a conference can materialize. One thing we must also bear in mind is that Sovereign National Conference achieved modest success in some countries and precipitated crisis in other countries and it did not lay the foundation for stable political governance in any of the countries involved.
The next question is whether all issues should be put on the table for the proposed National Conference or National Dialogue? It is my considered opinion that there are agreed ingredients of the Nigerian nation and we must be conscious of the lessons of history and not jump into the bandwagon of those claiming that every conceivable issue should be put on the table. For me, there are issues that are not negotiable and cannot be discussed and even if discussed can only be discussed in the context of strengthening them and not by way of altering them.
The first issue is the issue of the Supremacy of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999(amended). For good or for bad, section 1(1) of the Constitution makes it supreme and its provisions shall have binding force on all authorities and persons throughout the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Section 1(2) of the same Constitution also provides that the Federal Republic of Nigeria shall not be governed, nor shall any person or group of persons take control of the government of Nigeria or any part thereof, except in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.
The second issue relates to the indivisibility and indissolubility of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The moment we accept the limitations of the Conference by whatever name called, it will be clear that it is possible for Nigerians to discuss anything under the sun in such a conference bearing in mind some of the agreed ingredients of the Nigerian federation. This is consistent with section 39 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that guarantees the right to freedom of expression and the press. This means that the Conference can discuss and recommend to the National Assembly the strengthening of section 2(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which states that Nigeria is one indivisible and indissoluble sovereign state to be known by the name of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
However, if we go to the Conference or Dialogue to negotiate on the division or dissolution of the Nigeria, the Conference or Dialogue will end in confusion and may ignite a conflagration of immense proportions.
We must as a people and as a nation agree that we should only discuss the strengthening of the bond of unity and not join forces of disintegration by discussing the dissolution of the country.
It is also my contention that there are issues that the National Assembly can conveniently discuss and based on that alter the Constitution. Some of these issues are already receiving attention in the National Assembly. We must therefore submit weighty issues to the Conference and leave the National Assembly to conclude its Constitutional Amendment Process. The National Assembly should be left to discuss issues like immunity clause, legal challenge to pre-election matters, issues concerning the Judiciary; the issue of tenure of government; gender equality and justifiability of Chapter 11 of the Constitution
The National Conference of Dialogue should discuss the following issues among other issues that may be put in the Agenda:
1. The place of Local Governments in the structure of Government. Nigerians must agree whether the Local Governments should be constitutionally strengthened and or removed completely from the Constitution. In which cases States should be allowed to determine what they want.
2. Nigerians must discuss and agree on what citizenship means and the incidents of citizenship. This will address the issue of indigene/settler challenge in most parts of Nigeria.
3. Since the issue of State or Federal Police has become a recurring decimal in our national life, the Nigerian people should be given the opportunity to discuss the type of Police Force they want.
4. The issue of Land Use and Allocation should be discussed. This is because it appears that the present Land Tenure System is being used and has been used to dispossess the ordinary people of their lands rather than creating a uniform Land Tenure System for Nigeria.
5. The fate of States Independent Electoral Commissions should be discussed and this should be tied to the fate and existence of the various Local Governments.
6. The Structure of the Federation should be discussed. Let debates be generated as to whether the challenge of Nigeria is the structure of the Federation or the issue of good governance.
7. The Devolution of Powers from the Federal Government to the State Governments should be part of the agenda. This is because, some people believe that the Federal government is too powerful and uses its immense powers to oppress the States. They therefore want powers to be devolved to the States. This should also be discussed in relation to the Local Governments or Administrative Units.
8. The issue of Fiscal Federalism should be put on the table for discussion and this should be synchronized with the question of Resource Control and Revenue Allocation.
9. The recognition of geopolitical zones as entities should be put on the table for discussion. This should also include whether some States should be merged. This should also be tied with the issue of State creation. There is the need to clear the confusion.
10. The issue of Federal Character Principle should be discussed. Some people believe that the issue of Federal Character should be renegotiated. Some also believe that it should have a time limitation. Some believe that it should be extended to women and persons with disability.
11. The issue of a Role for Traditional Rulers has been on the agenda for some time now. I believe that the Nigerian people should discuss it and take a position.
12. The issue of poverty and youth unemployment should also be on the agenda for National Discourse. It is important to know why poverty is still growing at an alarming rate irrespective of the abundant resources in Nigeria
13. The Nigerian people should discuss the issue of Internal Security Challenges and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
These issues are not exhaustive but no nation can discuss all its challenges in one conference.

Jonathan signs same Sex Marriage Prohibition Bill into law

GEJ
In spite of protests from some countries, President Goodluck Jonathan has signed Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill 2013 into law.
The assent to the bill was devoid of fanfare to reduce diplomatic tension which it may likely attract.
Some foreign embassies were shocked by the development leading to ‘curious’ inquiries from the Federal Government. Despite the inquiries, the Federal Government said there is no going back.
The signed bill says the gays in Nigeria will however risk a 14-year jail term if they do not retrace their steps and renounce such marriage. Also, any person who operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organizations directly or indirectly will earn 10-year imprisonment. Those who administer witness, abet or aid the solemnization of a same sex marriage are going to bag 10-year jail term.
Investigation by our correspondent showed that the President assented to the Act on January 7, 2014.
The assent note, obtained by our correspondent yesterday, reads in part: “I certify that this Bill has been carefully compared by me with the decision reached by the National Assembly and found by me to be true and correct decision of the Houses and is in accordance with the provisions of the Acts Authentication Act Cap. A2, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. I assent.”
A reliable source said: “The President has signed the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill into law. This has foreclosed any pressure on President Jonathan not to assent to the bill.
“We received inquiries from some foreign embassies on why the bill was signed into law. But we told them that our cultural values do not tolerate same sex marriage.
“Also, we made it clear that since most Nigerians were opposed to the bill, the parliament acted in line with the wish of the majority. We are in a democratic setting, the President has no choice than to bow to the wish of the people.
“These embassies were shocked but there is no going back. We hope they will also abide by the decision of Nigerians.”
The details of the new Act was obtained yesterday by our correspondent.
The Act reads in part: “A marriage contract or civil union entered into between persons of same sex: (a) is prohibited in Nigeria; and (b) shall not be recognized as entitled to the benefits of a valid marriage.
“A marriage contract or civil union entered into between persons of same sex by virtue of a certificate issued by a foreign country is void in Nigeria, and any benefit accruing there-from by virtue of the certificate shall not be enforced by any court of law.
“A marriage contract or civil union entered into between persons of same sex shall not be sole nixed in a church, mosque or any other place of worship of Nigeria.
“No certificate issued to persons of same sex in a marriage or civil union shall be valid in Nigeria. Only a marriage contracted between a man and a woman shall be recognized as valid in Nigeria.
“The registration of gay clubs, societies and organizations, their sustenance, processions and meetings is prohibited.
“The public show of same sex amorous relationship directly or indirectly is prohibited.”
The Act also provides details of the sanctions awaiting the violators of the new law.
It adds: “A person who enters into a same sex marriage contract or civil union commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a term of 14 years imprisonment.
“A person who registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organizations directly or indirectly makes public show of dame sex amorous relationship in Nigeria commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a term of 10 years imprisonment.
“A person or group of persons who administers, witnesses, abets or aids the solemnization of a same sex marriage or civil union of supports the registration, operation and sustenance of gay clubs, societies, organizations, processions or meetings in Nigeria commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a term of 10 years imprisonment.
“The High Court of a State or of the Federal Capital Territory shall have jurisdiction to entertain matters raiding from the breach of the provisions of this Act.”

LEFT OVER ONIONS ARE POISONOUS.

ONIONS!

In 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people there was this Doctor that visited many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu...Many of the farmers and their families had contracted it and many died.

The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping the family healthy.

Now, I heard this story from my hairdresser. She said that several years ago, many of her employees were coming down with the flu, and so were many of her customers. The next year she placed several bowls with onions around in her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must work. Try it and see what happens. We did it last year and we never got the flu.

Now there is a P. S. to this for I sent it to a friend in Oregon who regularly contributes material to me on health issues. She replied with this most interesting experience about onions:

Thanks for the reminder. I don't know about the farmer's story...but, I do know that I contacted pneumonia, and, needless to say, I was very ill... I came across an article that said to cut both ends off an onion put it into an empty jar, and place the jar next to the sick patient at night. It said the onion would be black in the morning from the germs...sure enough it happened just like that...the onion was a mess and I began to feel better.

Another thing I read in the article was that onions and garlic placed around the room saved many from the black plague years ago. They have powerful antibacterial, antiseptic properties.

This is the other note. Lots of times when we have stomach problems we don't know what to blame. Maybe it's the onions that are to blame. Onions absorb bacteria is the reason they are so good at preventing us from getting colds and flu and is the very reason we shouldn't eat an onion that has been sitting for a time after it has been cut open.

LEFT OVER ONIONS ARE POISONOUS

I had the wonderful privilege of touring Mullins Food Products, Makers of mayonnaise. Questions about food poisoning came up, and I wanted to share what I learned from a chemist.

Ed, who was our tour guide, is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed's answer will surprise you. Ed said that all commercially-made mayo is completely safe.

"It doesn't even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating it, but it's not really necessary." He explained that the pH in mayonnaise is set at a point that bacteria could not survive in that environment. He then talked about the summer picnic, with the bowl of potato salad sitting on the table, and how everyone blames the mayonnaise when someone gets sick.

Ed says that, when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the officials look for is when the 'victim' last ate ONIONS and where those onions came from (in the potato salad?). Ed says it's not the mayonnaise (as long as it's not homemade mayo) that spoils in the outdoors. It's probably the ONIONS, and if not the onions, it's the POTATOES.

He explained onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked onions. You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion.. He says it's not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your refrigerator.

It's already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit, that it can be a danger to you (and doubly watch out for those onions you put in your hotdogs at the baseball park!). Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy you'll probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put on your sandwich, you're asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato in a potato salad, will attract and grow bacteria faster than any commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break down.

Also, dogs should never eat onions. Their stomachs cannot metabolize onions.

Please remember it is dangerous to cut an onion and try to use it to cook the next day, it becomes highly poisonous for even a single night and creates toxic bacteria which may cause adverse stomach infections because of excess bile secretions and even food poisoning.

Please pass this on to everyone you care for...

Who will be the King of African football?

The annual CAF Awards enters its 22nd edition this year and the Awards Gala will take place Lagos, Nigeria.

On Thursday, January 9, 2013; the King of African football will be unveiled at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos; amongst the trio of Yaya Toure, past winner of the last two editions; his Ivorian counterpart Didier Drogba and John Obi Mikel (Nigeria).
From 1992 to 2012, from Ghana’s Abedi Pele to Ivorian Toure, 14 players have laid claim to the most prestigious individual honour in African football. Eto’o has been crowned an unprecedented four times – 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010, whilst Senegalese forward, El Hadji Diouf won the award twice in succession; 2001 and 2002 just as Toure in 2011 and 2012.
However, the first player to have been named CAF African footballer of the Year on two occasions remain ex-Nigeria captain Nwankwo Kanu, in 1996 and 1999 before Drogba duplicated the feat in 2006 and 2009.
Winners of the prestigious honour have come from either the midfield or attack; and that tradition will be respected yet again this year as the contenders are within that scope.
In addition, the 14 players to have been decorated since 1992 had and continue to remain amongst the foremost African ambassadors of the world’s most popular sport.
When the roll call for the laureates is launched, there is one noticeable observation; Nigeria is the country which has the biggest number of laureates with five awards in total, two for Kanu, one each for Emmanuel Amunike, Rashidi Yekini and Victor Ikpeba.
Patrick Mboma won it once coupled with Eto’o’s four-time feat also gives Cameroon five titles, Cote d’Ivoire has four in Drogba (twice) and Toure (twice) whilst Diouf is responsible for the only two titles in the name of Senegal.
One-time winners include Ghana – Abedi Pele, Liberia – George Weah (the only African player to have been crowned FIFA World Footballer of the Year), Morocco – Mustapha Hadji, Mali – Frederic Kanoute and Togo – Emmanuel Adebayor.
Another common feature is that all winners plied their trade in Europe at the time of their coronation.
